Waterford Mennonite Church MYF Visits Amish Home

Farm1On March 12, the MYF from Waterford Mennonite Church visited the home of Mose and Etta Miller for an Amish meal and an opportunity to hear about the Amish community. Not only are Mennonites related closely in faith to the Amish but some are related biologically; from the group several are related to Etta Miller.

After a delicious meal including rolls and Amish peanut butter, mashed potatoes and gravy, noodles, chicken, and pie, the meal was concluded with Mose saying the Lord’s Prayer in German, a typical Amish practice. Mose then spoke to the MYF about his life and experiences with the Amish around this area, and some basic faith practices of the Amish.

Mose shared about his call to become a deacon in the Amish church and explained the process of being chosen, which is by lot. Mose himself was changed by God, providing him with the gifts for the office. He was shy and avoided conversations but became a man eager to share and relate in one-on-one conversations.

Mose talked about some spiritual disciplines specific to the Amish faith, including twice a day family devotions. There is a lot of emphasis on helping children learn the faith, and a high priority is placed on spending time with children. He also mentioned the important values of being a listener, choosing words wisely, and being compassionate. Mose talked about faith concepts important to him that are in agreement with Mennonites, for example the idea that we are saved by grace and not because of “rules,” and the way that people live should reflect their faith.

It was also interesting to hear Mose’s dialogue about the Amish districts in the area, and how they govern, relate, and grow. As they continue to grow, the districts divide based on geography. It was interesting to hear Mose speak from the Amish perspective, especially as growth has been a subject recently addressed at Waterford in the form of two services.

This experience was rewarding and interesting for the MYF and sponsors, and the food was enjoyed by all!
