End of The Year Emotions

The 2013-2014 school year has flown by so fast. There have been so many highlights this year from the Speech team recieving 5th place in the state, to the girls basketball teams making it to sectionals. There was also the devastating loss of Margaret Fischer due to her fight with cancer, and also Tim Lehman and Allan Dueck declared they will be leaving the Bethany Community.

The underclassmen will be getting ready to transfer into the next grade, they will be turning in and receiving computers next year, however this is the last year for seniors… They will be leaving Bethany Christian Schools and moving on to bigger and better things, such as college, work and/or service.

Over the course of this year, there have been many singing tests, lab reports and projects that seniors have had to turn in. I asked all of the seniors if they finally felt like seniors. Here are some of the responses:

“Yes, I definitely think of myself as a senior.  I am so done.”–Corey Hostetler (‘14)

“No, I don’t think of myself as a senior. This year flew by but I’m ready to be done.”–Lorae Weaver (‘14)

“No, that will take another 45 years when I get discounts.”–Abe Thorne (‘14)

“[Heck] yeah I think of myself of a senior. It’s kinda great.”–Sammy Kauffman (‘14)

The year after a person graduated high school can be used to figure out what they are going do for the rest of their life. College could help prepare them to get an ideal job, or they could start working right away. There is also the option of service, for people that want to make the world a better place. The thought of life after high school can be overwhelming sometimes. Another question I asked seniors is if the future scares them, and they responded:

“It doesn’t really scare me that I’m leaving high school, but it does scare me that I am becoming an adult and sharing a room at college. I’ve never really done that before.”–Samantha Horsch (‘14)

“It [scares me], but it is a good scary, that my normal routine will completely change…I’m excited for it though and ready for the change…it’s not that scary”–Liz DeLeeuw (‘14)

“I’m scared of starting college, not of high school ending.”–Katie Shank (‘14)

Some students may have had the plan of going to college since the beginning of freshman year, and others are still unsure of what to do with their life. The question of what seniors are planning for next year seems to be a common one, the seniors had various responses:

“Columbia College Chicago, Comedy Writing and Performance.”–Rachel A. Schrock (‘14)

“I am going to EMU to study History Education.”–Corey Hostetler (‘14)

“My plans are to attend Bethel College and major in Elementary. Ed….[I’m] debating whether or not that was the right major..I’m hoping to figure it out over the summer and fall.”–Liz DeLeeuw (‘14)

“[I’m planning to] work at camp.”–Ryan Miller (‘14)

Sadly this year is coming to an end with only a few days left. But it seems like the seniors are pretty sure of what the next year has in store.
