My Freshman Year – by Lane Miller

This freshman year has been quite a journey. I’ve learned a lot about being in high school. It was a big leap coming from the top of the food chain back down to the bottom. It’s like a whole other world in high school. Everyone is taller, more serious, and focused. Throughout the year I’ve learned to start working on these skills as well. I’ve also managed to acquire some knowledge about being a freshman. Let me explain some of my knowledge.

The first thing I will share about is the use of study halls. High school is a whole other level of school. I get homework almost every day which is different from middle school. And who wants to do homework at home right? So use your study halls, they are there for your benefit.  You can easily finish a math assignment in a 45 minute period. Study hall is another good time to study also. Hence the name “study” hall. An added bonus is that if you don’t have work or you don’t have any tests coming up soon, you can do whatever. Listen to music, talk with friends, or just relax. Study halls are your friend. Use them to your benefit.

Another thing to keep in mind is that procrastination hurts. Maybe you think that you can do it later with no problem, but it will get back at you in the long run. Just think, would you rather do it now or dread doing it later that night? Doing it earlier has its advantages. It feels so nice to get home and kick back and watch some ESPN and spend time with your family. Procrastination can cause you to turn in late assignments even. If you decide to do the assignment in the study before the class it’s due in, then you might end up not finishing it or turning it in late. Procrastination is a bad habit that should be avoided at all costs.

Another bit of advice is to take notes during class. Take notes on presentations even when you don’t have to. You can refer back to these notes to study or for some homework help. Don’t think that you’ll remember the lesson later, because you probably won’t. Taking notes helps you remember easier and it’s a good habit to get into.

The final thing I learned about this year is how loving and caring my friends and the Bethany Community is. This year I have grown in faith and realized who my true friends are.  The teachers have really helped me and made me work hard. Chapel is a great time to be with God during the school day. I’ve enjoyed singing hymns and listening to the senior faith statements this year. Mentoring has been another big thing for me this year. We talk about our faith and about our everyday lives. This is really important to me. I love spending time with my friends too. They have helped me with my high school journey so far. They helped me realize how I would have nothing without them.
