If Students Were Given the Power to Hire Anyone

There are times when students wonder what school would be like if they had different teachers. This is not to say that students are displeased with their teachers, only that some fantasize about alternate realities where Mountain Dew comes out of the drinking fountains and Robert Downey Jr. teaches tech classes.

In a recent survey, students around the Bethany community were asked who they would want as a teacher if they were given the power to hire anybody in the world.

While some may expect the answers to be more along the lines of fictional teachers such as Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus, the answers instead reflected famous people that students thought would be easy to pay attention to.

Danielle Welty (‘15) said that if she had the power to hire anyone in the world, she would want Harry Styles as a P.E. teacher. When asked why, the One Direction fan answered “because it would be something good to look at.”

Lane Miller (‘17) dreams of having Gaël Monfils as a tennis instructor. Monfils is a French player renowned for being able to get the ball back into the opponent’s side of the court in unlikely circumstances. “He could teach me to do a triple-backflip and get the ball back,” Miller said.

Simon Hurst’s (‘17) dream art teacher would be M.C. Escher. Escher is an artist famous for black-and-white drawings that contain optical illusions or surrealism.  “It would be interesting to see what he gave us for assignments.”

Although members of the student body may have differing ideas of a dream teacher, there was one figure that stood out more than the rest.

Actor Morgan Freeman was brought up multiple times as an ideal History teacher. “His voice is the best storytelling voice,” said Noah Hochstetler (‘15). Ethan Lapp (‘16) chose Freeman as his ideal teacher as well, though when forced to give a second choice, he said he would like Beyonce as a music teacher.

Hans Miller (‘15) also said he wanted Morgan Freeman as a teacher. “I would want him to teach Bible classes because he’s wise and can teach life lessons. And I like his voice. His voice could narrate my life.”
