Teachers With Outside Jobs (TWOJ)- Calvin Swartzendruber

Many students assume that their teachers at school have one occupation. They believe that teachers only jobs are at school, and that they’re lives revolve around their work. Students  tend to not realize that many teachers have jobs or hobbies outside of school. Calvin Swartzendruber does much more than teach Chemistry and Physics at Bethany. Outside of school, Calvin works for two different universities. He works at Goshen College, and has since about a year after he graduated college. He also works at Western Governor’s University and has worked there for two years. Calvin began each of these jobs to give further financial aid on top of his salary at Bethany.

At Goshen College, Calvin works as an Occupational Safety Specialist. He is in charge of workplace safety, OSHA compliance and training, and Workers Compensation. Calvin is also on the Safety Committee, and works in the chemistry stockroom. When asked about why he enjoys that job, Calvin said that he enjoys working with different people and having a sense of accomplishment when working on big projects.

At Calvin’s other job, he works in the Evaluation Department as a faculty member. His job consists of grading student submissions from all over the country. Calvin enjoys this job because it is done at home. He gets to read and grade some very interesting essays, and his work can be done whenever he is available.
Over all, Calvin’s jobs are to bring in extra income outside of teaching. However, each is in  an area he’s interested in.
