Getting Involved at Bethany (From a New Perspective)

Every year the population of Bethany gets larger, whether it’s an incoming freshman, or a new student. Last winter, I came to Bethany unsure of how well I was going to fit in. For me I felt super comfortable right away because I got involved. Some students may find it easier to fit in than others. There are many activities that Bethany offers to get its students involved. Some activities include participating in a theatre production at Bethany, or taking part in a sport, and also participating in activities during lunch. These activities may range from a kick-ball tournament between grades, or something as creative as a snowman-building contest in the winter. These are just some of the activities that are done year-round at Bethany.

Lunch time is a great opportunity for students to socialize, whether it’s with other students or staff members. If you are a social butterfly, this time will be very handy after you’re done eating; where you can chat with fellow classmates about ongoing events. The Junior and Senior class have spaces which are called lounges to do exactly that–lounge. Students are allowed to hang out there during breaks, lunchtimes, and study groups. Sometimes, when teachers split up the class into small groups for a project, the students are allowed to work in these lounges. For me personally, I really enjoy spending time in the lounge. Alot of the time, others of my classmates finish up certain assignments. So when I have questions on an assignment in english, they are most often answered during this time.

For every sport, there is a Senior Night. This is a night where every senior on the varsity team is recognized for their hard work. Usually all the seniors that go to the game, go over the top to support the senior athletes. This year for the Soccer Senior night, most of the seniors wore the athletes jersey, some of them, including me, even sported face paint. Whenever I go to an athletic event, I know that I am going to have a lot of fun. I enjoy supporting the athletes with other classmates. It’s something that I can be apart of since I’m not in any sport. Even if you aren’t a senior, these nights are still fun to go to because you will get to be apart of the chaos that goes on during these games. This is an excellent way to bond with friends or make new ones while also supporting Bethany’s athletes.

One thing that I have enjoyed doing, even before coming to Bethany was participating in theater. When I first transferred, Talashia gave me the opportunity to help with the special effects makeup for the musical, Oklahoma. I had a really great time being part of the crew. My advice to you is to make sure that you keep doing what you love even if you’re not at the same school. Most likely, the experience will be just as enjoyable–or more–here than it is anywhere else.

These are just some of the ways that students can get involved here at Bethany. But the most important thing is just to make sure you are not going at these activities alone. It is much more enjoyable when you have friends to spend time with as well. If you don’t quite feel comfortable yet, Bethany is a very humble and friendly group, and will be sure to include you if you just ask. Once you have decided what to partake in, this year will be a fun one and not easy to forget.
