Job Shadowing Review

One of the highlights of being a Bethany Senior is the opportunity to job shadow at the beginning of the second semester. While the rest of the High School is on J-Term for two weeks, Seniors are job shadowing for the first week and then on senior trip for the second. A student isn’t allowed to shadow an immediate family member. However, students can shadow in whatever area they are interested in, making the possibilities endless.

The requirements for job shadowing are twelve hours at each location a student chooses. There need to be two different locations that a student needs to shadow. If they choose to work at a hospital, they need to shadow in two different areas. Joseph Mumaw (‘14) had the opportunity to watch a few surgeries when he shadowed at the Goshen Hospital. Sammy Kauffman (‘14) also shadowed at the Hospital but in Neonatal Care, which is working with premature babies.

Away from the hospital but still in the medical field, Parth Patel (‘14) and Bryan Nguyen (‘14) shadowed a pharmacist at CVS Pharmacy. They had the chance to see what happens behind the counter, such as what the pharmacist does every day. Parth even had the opportunity to sort pills.

Samantha Horsch (‘14), Brooke Hershberger (‘14) and Nicole Schwartz (‘14) had the opportunity to shadow at a Veterinary Hospital. They followed around veterinarian technicians to see how they took care of the animals and also had the chance to sit in on a few surgeries. Samantha she said she liked the experience but got slightly woozy when she sat in on a few surgeries.

A majority of the shadowing was done in the medical field, but there were other areas that students were interested in as well. Katie Hurst (‘14) was able to shadow an editor at The Elkhart Truth. She had the opportunity to learn more about editing, and Ryan Miller (‘14) shadowed an electrician at Goshen College.

This experience gave students a better understanding of their future. Hopefully shadowing will help students with their decisions for their life after high school.
