Second Place Poetry Contest Winner: You Can Always Assume Too Much by Isabel Rondo

People see her and assume,

They assume that they see a girl,

That they see a girl who is confident and positive.

Oh,

But they couldn’t be more wrong.

They assume too much,

They don’t look far enough.

They don’t see the blemishes behind her bangs,

Or the pain behind her eyes.

They only see what they want to see,

And what they see is what she tries to be.

Her mind is a labyrinth.

There are many turns, possibilities, and options.

She puts up barricades and forces smiles.

She tricks them so well.

Can you see the pain,

Can you interpret smiles,

Can you knock down the barricades

And hold her close so that she feels safe?

She is not pretty,

So you won’t approach her.

She is slightly shy,

So you don’t want to try.

She forces you out,

Yet secretly wants to let you in.

Can you interpret her labyrinth

Of a mind set towards victory

Yet is so far down in the hole that her cries

Are stifled by the dirt of her own sorrows?

Down, down, down,

You search

But soon retreat.

For what you see is something,

Something that is hopeless and fruitless.

She finally gave up,

Finally surrendered.

She hopes you are all happy,

at least,

that’s what her note said.

That note,

written in crimson tears,

now is time,

now is the time to ask yourself how much you could have really helped her.
