The Impeachment Inquiry Against Trump: For Dummies

So Trump, we’ve all heard about him. From his talk of building walls to his alleged connections with Russia, Trump has formed quite the character. And his controversy only continues to grow with the Democrats call for his impeachment. But what do the Democrats say Trump did? Do they have any evidence? And does Trump have any defense? These are all questions that will be answered in Sightline’s new series: WHAT?! THE WORLD’S WACK!

But before we get into it, let’s start by explaining what impeachment really is. Impeachment is a process where the House of Representatives, a group of 435 individuals, brings forward a charge against the president for “treason, bribery, or other high crimes or misdemeanors” as taken from the constitution. A vote is then held and a simple majority is needed for the charges to pass. The process then moves to the Senate where a trial is held. After the trial, 100 Senators vote on whether to convict the president or not, however, a two-thirds majority is now needed for them to be removed from office.

So what are the charges? Well for starters, President Trump is accused of pressuring Ukraine to dig up damaging information on Joe Biden and his son Hunter. He is also accused of withholding 400 million dollars of military aid from Ukraine that was already agreed to be given by Congress. These acts are considered by Democrats to be an “abuse of presidential power” and “using the office for personal political gain and to the detriment of national security”.

Now is there any evidence you may ask? Well, I wouldn’t be writing an article about this if there wasn’t any, so let’s dive in. What started this whole shebang was a formal complaint was made from an unnamed intelligence official whistleblower who wrote about his concerns about Trump’s July call with Ukraine’s President. A rough transcript of the call showed that Trump urged Ukraine’s President to investigate alleged claims against Joe Biden and his son. Another senior official later testified that the President would only allow the foreign aid to Ukraine as long as Joe Biden was investigated publically by Ukraine, however, the White House denies this.

What about Trump’s defense? Well, he definitely hasn’t stopped using Twitter to express his feelings. He has written that this inquiry is a “witch hunt” and denies using the foriegn aid as a bargaining chip. However, his supporters are also proclaiming his innocence loud and clear. Some even saying that they will try to impeach Joe Biden of the same claims if he becomes president. But for the truth of the matter we’ll just have to wait to find out. And boy I hope you’re as excited as I am.
