Oscars Review

The Academy Awards are a time when moviemakers and moviegoers come together and celebrate the best of the best in cinema over the year. But, as high schoolers, many of us spend our Sunday nights writing essays or better yet, sleeping. Watching a two and a half-hour long award show isn’t a priority for most, so here’s what you missed from the Oscars.

Parasite. The movie you probably haven’t heard of but need to watch now*. This South Korean film won four Oscars including Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature Film, Best Director, and Best Picture. Bong Joon Ho, the director, himself was surprised by the success saying in his third speech that he thought he was done for the night after winning Best International Feature. Continuing to impress, Parasite was the first film in a language other than English to win Best Picture.

If you don’t care as much about movies, performing throughout the night were several very talented artists. Among these were Cynthia Erivo, Eminem, Billie Eilish, Randy Newman, and Elton John. A good diversity which gave a nod to different genres and generations.

Other awards included Joaquin Phoenix for Best Actor in a Leading Role in Joker, Renée Zellweger for Best Actress in a Leading Role in Judy, Roger Deakins for Best Cinematography for 1917, and Toy Story 4 for Best Animated Feature Film.

*Disclaimer: Parasite is rated R for some nudity, violence, and strong language. If you’re under seventeen don’t watch without parent approval. If you are seventeen or older, you should still probably ask your parents.
