Fine Arts Night Award Winners Discuss Their Winning Pieces

Fine Arts Night at Bethany was a great success! We had many people join and get recognized, and we also had many award winners! We got in contact with the award winners from Fine Arts Night to discuss how they felt about their pieces and any sort of inspiration they had.

Mara (Class of 2025)

“I used a photo reference of my brother for this piece. I LOVE stippling (using dots for shading) so I wanted to do a project with it. I really had no plan for the background going into it so that was honestly just random. “

Emerson (Class of 2025)

“I just felt like drawing Mario (11) and thought it would be funny. I felt I could have shaded it better and I would have taken more time on smaller details. It stayed very similar to my original idea.”

Leah (Class of 2025)

“We were told to make an animal head and I chose to do a narwhal because I thought it would be a fun challenge to build the giant tusk. The construction of the waves is a bit sloppy. Parts of the waves have no paper mache on them and they were a pain to paint. This project ended up very similar to my original sketch. Throughout the process, I did not think it would turn out but in the end, I surprised myself.”

Gretchen (Class of 2026)

“I was inspired to make these because I had to do a final project for ceramics and I had the idea to make a set with a plate, bowl, and a mug but that did not work out so, I shifted to a set of bowls. I got the idea for how I glazed the bowls while I was scrolling on Pinterest and saw an artist who had made bowls that had speckled backgrounds and colorful stripes on them on the inside of the bowl and I liked it, so I changed it a bit and put the rainbows cascading down the side. Then I took inspiration from Grace Triplet for the big bowl because she often glazed things with that dripping style and I always thought it looked cool. There are many things I could have done better, like getting the speckles more evenly spread out and not having big black spots in the bowls, I should have made sure that I put the colors in the same order when I glazed the bowls, I don’t know if you noticed the rainbow switched directions in the middle and then switched back. among lots of other things”

Marta (Class of 2026)

“The coral mug was my choice project, and the toad box was for a slab box project. I realized this year in art that I really like to create and experiment with making different types of textures, and the coral mug was a way to showcase that. For the toad box I just thought it would be fun to try and replicate the bumpy texture of a toad’s skin. There are some spots on the mug that I could’ve used more glaze on, but overall I’m pretty happy with how they both turned out. I didn’t really have a specific vision in mind for either of the projects, so I just figured things out as I went along and hoped for the best, especially since it’s not always guaranteed that the glaze will turn out how you want it to.”
